Weekly Writing Assignment #2: The Mirror
Mirrors and reflections play an important role in our lives. Most of us look in them every day, sometimes multiple times a day. We check our clothes, our hair, our makeup. We seek to ensure that our outward appearance signifies the person we want to be.
Yet as the revered poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote:
These faces in the mirrors
Are but the shadows and phantoms of myself.
Or, that great actress of our time, Tori Spelling put it:
The truth is that we rarely see who we really are when we look into the mirror (though, I’m sure many of us can imagine Tori Spelling as a stripper). But, take our self-absorbed behavior and show it to the world…that is another story all together.
The Assignment
For this week’s writing assignment, write a description of someone looking into the mirror. What are they wearing? How are they dressed? What are they doing? Are they getting ready for an inteview? A date? Most importanly, why are they looking into the mirror? What do they hope to see?
No need for a complete narrative on this assignment. A thorough description that helps us peer into the life–and possibly soul–of the character is sufficient.
Entries should be 300 words MAXIMUM. Entries longer than this will not be eligible to win. Please spell check and make sure your punctuation is correct. If you’re unsure about something, ask someone or consult a resource.
Send your completed assignment to weeklywritingassignment@gmail.com. Please include the assignment number in the subject of your email. Please also include your name and email in the header of your entry.
Due date: Midnight, August 3, 2009.
Late assignments will not be accepted.
Good luck!
