Weekly Finalist: Fly on the Wall by Lea Stahl

A thousand, thousand screens reflect what I see and what I see is you. I’m your unknown stalker who watches your every move, who follows you wherever and everywhere you please, and knows you like no other. I am one of many in this world, but will never survive the next day; Part of a cycle that never fails; the cycle of death and rebirth, life as we call it. 24 hours to live and you could care less.
I see you too, the unfaithful husband cheating with the secretary, blurring the lines of employer and employee, and you, the thief robbing the poor bank, and the student cheating on his test right under the teacher’s nose. You’d think they’d be ashamed, but no. Especially the litter bugs. I give a special gratitude to you, you help me continue my cycle and allow me to be reborn.

I am the recyclable god. I am the fly on your wall. I see all, I know all, but when I whisper these foreign truths into your ear, I become your worst enemy. The messenger you wish to shoot down.

Now I have your attention, you finally see me, and cannot look away. Your newly found mission to destroy me drives you forward, to erase these secrets you’ve kept from others, the ones you keep, polluting your already wicked mind.  Your weapon of choice? A book? A swatter? Oh, how original, a rolled up newspaper! My evasion of your pointless aiming is a pesky annoyance that you’ve brought upon yourself. Swat! I fall to the ground, cold and flat. Dead as you smile upon your victory of killing the vicious beast that invaded your kingdom, but it won’t matter. Tomorrow I will return to learn your secrets once again in a new form, as something different but identical at the same time.

It simply takes time, that’s all. I am renewed, a slimy, squiggly thing that dines upon your garbage, it’s a matter of hours, that’s all, before I become whole again and then we will repeat our dance a million times and see if something happens.
